Coming to Life Series – Volume 1 : The Sun Petal with Mirror

Flowers are a symbol of strength, purity, and generosity.  When designing this piece, we wanted to show homage to the
artisans creating it through the beauty of flower petals.  The grace of the curves of the petals paired with the crisp line of the sun rays, we feel our artisan’s strength, purity, and generosity whenever we look at this piece of art.

The sun petal starts with the center mirror as its focal point. The metal is carefully measured in an 8 inch circumference, and the artisans mold the casing for the glass mirror by hand. This process takes about an hour for the metal to cool and set. The glass mirror is placed last in this process. From there, the petals are individually crafted with a mold separately from the mirror.

As the petals are finished, they are welded and secured by hand, alternating with one solid piece of metal formed into a very thin cylinder. This design element was added to incorporate the brightness of sun rays into the piece. After each ray is welded onto the mirror foundation we take a specially made powder finish in Brass, Copper, and Brown and coat the front of the piece. Once the powder finish has set, the mirror is put in place.
